Family History opened in over 170 theaters nationwide last Wednesday, July 24. It served as the comeback of GMA Pictures, formerly GMA Films, in producing films. Michael V a.k.a. Bitoy wrote, directed, and starred in the film.
According to Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP), Family History grossed P3 Million Pesos on its first day of screening.
The film was flooded with praises from both netizens and film critics.
LloyDometer posted on Facebook, “Sariwang sariwa ang atake nya sa family-drama storytelling dahil naisingit pa rin nya ang personality nya as a person, as an actor, as an artist. Effortlessly comedic ang ilang eksena pero heart breaking at successfully tear jerking ang karamihan sa scenes.”
The Fanboy SEO wrote on his blog, “Highly recommend the film. It makes sense why it took awhile before Michael V launched this as you feel that its love letter to the artform and the medium. Nothing is bad here, everything goes between OK to Great. The comedy is spot-on and the tearjerking moments are effective. Most importantly, there was only one scene with an actual endorsement. Good job!”
A netizen named Jen Nett enumerated 46 reasons why you should watch Family History. According to her, “46 has the same impact as Marvel End Game’s “I love you 3000″. Ung mga nakapanuod lang ang makakaintindi sa 46 [smiling emoticon]”
Pablo Tariman, a Film Critic, wrote on his column in The Philippine Star, “Family History tackles a serious marital issue in a funny way. Just when you didn’t expect it, the movie is well-written, well-acted and yes, the director did his homework.”
Mario Bautista of Malaya and People’s Journal praised Family History’s cinematography and musical score.
“Technically, Family History is handsomely mounted with superb cinematography. The musical score is also very adequate and the song composed for the movie has all the makings of a ditty that should win an award for best original song,” Bautista commented.
Nickie Wang, entertainment editor of Manila Standard, said, “Andaming emosyon ng #FamilyHistory. Mga 46. Congrats GMA Pictures and Mic Test Entertainment.”
PEP Contributor Rose Garcia praised Bitoy’s masterpiece, “Pinatunayan na naman ni Michael V ang pagiging genius nya… ang ganda ng #FamilyHistory. Ang dami kong tawa, lungkot, as in 46X!”
Veteran columnist Nitz Miralles liked the theme song of Family History. She wrote in her column, “Bukod sa story at acting, maganda rin ang theme song ng Family History na ‘Bakit Ganun’ na nagpa-LSS sa tao.”
Family Histoy is now showing in select theaters nationwide! Make sure to watch it and support Filipino movies.
