5 ABS-CBN films to be adapted in Tamil Nadu, India

The biggest hits of the Philippines’ one of the leading movie companies will soon be adapted in Tamil Nadu, India.

ABS-CBN Film Productions has announced that it is forging an agreement with Tamil Nadu-based film production company Global One Studios to remake five of its box-office movies, all top-billed by the phenomenal loveteam of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla.

Global One Studios’ recently completed projects are “Charulatha,” “Raman Thediya Seethai,” and the Tamil adaptation of the Thai horror movie “Alone.”

The deal is historic in Philippine cinema as it will be the first time for India, considered as one the largest movie hubs in the world, to localize five Filipino films with lead artists and introduce them to new and talented Indian loveteams to Bollywood.

However, this isn’t the case as Tamil Nadu is just one of the many regions in India, and Tamil is not widely used in India since the official language of its capital is Hindi. Only 6% of the entire Indian population knows how to speak Tamil.

And according to the latest India census, Tamil Nadu’s population is only 83.7 million in 2021 compared to the Philippines’ 110 million people.

“This is great opportunity for ABS-CBN Films to share our well-loved and heartfelt stories and become a source of inspiration for global audiences,” ABS-CBN Films Managing Director Olivia Lamasan said.

“The Philippines and India share many common values, among which is the strong love for family, that resonates in our films and will soon be experienced by the people of India.”

The president of Global One Studios Rames Krishnamoorthy said, “We are happy to be associated with ABS-CBN Films to bring their well-crafted love stories to the people of India by adapting their heartrending films in Indian languages.

“Family bonding and cultural values are common to both Philippines and India, which are captured seamlessly in their films.

“This will be the first time that five Filipino films will be remade in India and we are excited to join hands with ABS-CBN to showcase their relationship stories with the same intense and emotions through our films.”

The five films set for Tamil remake are “Barcelona: A Love Undold,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Crazy Beautiful You,” “She’s Dating the Gangster,” and “The Hows of Us,” which was the Philippines’ top grossing film in 2018.

Daniel and Kathryn were named Phenomenal Box Office Stars in 2019 for “The Hows of Us,” Box Office King and Queen in 2017 for the movie “Barcelona: A Love Untold,” Prince and Princess of Philippine Movies in 2018 for “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and in 2016 for “Crazy Beautiful You.”

The Tamil adaptation deal comes at a time when Kathryn and Daniel, popularly called KathNiel, are celebrating their 10th anniversary as a love team. They started teaming up on television in 2011 and eventually became top movie stars with a stellar lineup of projects together.

Crafted by Filipino filmmakers and screenwriters, these ABS-CBN movies are expected to bring universal stories of love, hope, perseverance, and inspiration among Tamil audiences through their local adaptations.
